Gardening Resources What You Can Do Embracing The Trees
Amma Center New Mexico Ashram Green Initiative

Spring is almost here at 7,600 feet elevation and we are busy preparing for our 2019 gardening season!

The Amma Center is blessed with 600 sq ft of ornamental gardens, an orchard of 40 fruit trees, more than 700 sq ft of outdoor raised beds, 640 sq ft greenhouse and a labyrinth. There is also a large rainwater catchment system and a grey water system that provides approximately 70% of the water needs to sustain the water for the gardens and orchard.

We are blessed with pristine land that produces many pounds of organic fruits, vegitables and herbal medicines every year.

We also have several ornamental gardens that provide beauty and a peaceful ambiance for residents, guests and wildlife. And don’t forget the many acres of pristine pinon/juniper forests that surround the Center.

“Amma feels strongly that everyone should be able to eat vegetables grown organically at least once in a week, and that the act of growing these vegetables on one’s own is a practical step we can all take to help restore the lost harmony between humanity and nature. We also make organic fruit and vegetables available to our local satsang members.”

March Report

The tomato seedlings are 6 inches tall and growing fast. This week we planted peas, dug up parsley plants to give away, and are in the midst of pruning the roses and fruit trees. We are also grinding corn harvested and processed last fall for tortillas and corn bread.  We are still eating last year’s apples, dried and frozen tomatoes and have tulsi and other tinctures for sale.

Current Garden Seva Opportunities

March and April is the time for preparing beds for planting and starting seedlings indoors. We need help with clearing old matter from the beds, moving and spreading manure and compost, replacing hardware cloth under the raised beds to deter gophers, weeding, mulching gardens with wood chips and  repairing and testing the water systems. If you have 2 or 3 hours of time during the week or on the weekend please contact Anaswara at 707-338-6873 or vmay295@gamail.com to arrange a time to do garden seva. Or you can come for a visit and a tour of our gardens.

Our Vision
