Earth Warriors Unite During 2019 US Summer Tour

This article highlights some of the eco-victories and the sevites who’s spirit of unity, enthusiasm, and willingness to Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Repurpose, Recycle and Rot made the 2019 summer tour a cause for celebration.

Nature's Joy

Their awareness and sincere efforts to Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Rethink their waste had a significant impact on Mother Nature. They washed and reused every plastic and glass container throwing nothing away, left zero food waste post-tour through meticulous inventory tracking, reused their packing paper, boxes and aluminum foil trays and upcycled used fabric to create 'Mother Earth' bags which sold out in every city.

Tour Dishwashing Crew

The tour dishwashing crew agreed to rinse all metal and glass containers to reduce contamination and keep our recyclables from going to the landfill. The entire team undertook this additional task with enthusiasm, a sense of humor and willingness to go the extra mile to help our planet.

Chicago Ashram

A crew of local sevites, dedicated to becoming more sustainable, cleaned out the ashram kitchen and removed 2 cart loads of single-use and unsustainable plastic products which had accumulated over the years. The items removed were donated to a local charity. Going forward, they are eliminating all disposable dishware (including compostables) and using their own reusable dishware for events throughout the year and for Amma’s summer tour.

San Ramon GreenTeam

With many hours of hard work, perseverance and dedication, the GreenTeam has gone up and beyond to ensure the ashram’s waste is exited responsibly. This includes driving to offsite locations to drop off hard-to-recycle items, creating a detailed sorting area and managing multiple recycling stations on the property. Additionally, they created a "moving toward zero waste" campaign, encouraging people to bring their own dishware to the Saturday program and offering a $3.00 discount toward the prasad meal for those who bring their own plate!

Source Reduction Department

The Source Reduction Dept. sold sustainable products that are an alternative to commonly used plastic products such as bamboo travel utensils, stainless steel straws, bees wax wraps as an alternative to plastic wrap, compostable toothbrushes made from bamboo and pouches made from recycled plastic.

The source reduction table played informational videos on why we need to reduce our plastic consumption and allowed people to take a test to discover their plastic footprint.

Tour Packing Crew

Going forward, the tour will be using reusable wraps to secure the pallets instead of shrink wrap – HOORAY! Thanks to the tour packing crew for their willingness to test this new product during the tour. The wraps are made in the US, can be used for several years and at the end of their lifespan, are fully recyclable.

"We must strive as much as possible to recycle and reuse waste. Mother Nature has her own miraculous ways of recycling and reusing waste, thus preserving life. Let it be our aim to create a world with zero waste." - Amma

Together, we CAN make a difference!
